A Legacy of Care
Nathan Carreira was an exceptional 15-year-old ski racer who was at his happiest on the snow of Stratton Mountain. In 2018, Nathan died by suicide, leaving a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the Vermont community he loved [March 12, 2003–March 26, 2018]. In his honor, the Nathan M. Carreira Endowment Fund (NMC) is dedicated to transforming youth mental health across Southern Vermont by bridging the gap between isolation and support. Sustained by the annual #Shred4Nate race and dedicated contributions, this endowment represents a grassroots movement.
Our commitment to youth wellness is exemplified by Nate’s Corner, a flagship on-campus sanctuary at Burr & Burton Academy. This space serves as a vital first-touch point where students can find a "mental reset" and build the confidence to seek formal counseling. Students utilize the space to self-regulate and develop coping skills for challenges ranging from panic attacks or eating disorders, to stressful home environments, ensuring that a moment of emotional crisis does not derail a student’s education.
