Why?

Children who grow up in poverty often remain there into adulthood...and so begins the cycle that continues for generations.  The Stratton Foundation addresses the challenges of hunger, basic necessities, and health as a child grows, to clear a pathway to education and impress upon their desire for a better life.  Poverty is not only the lack of income, but it is also the lack of resources, the lack of choice, and the inability to see beyond the present.  The Foundation’s goal is to break the cycle, making a long term investment for long term results through not only financial support, but through the relationship created by each scholarship, fostering encouragement, inspiration, pride and accountability that is typically missing in a child’s life.  Through education, children will develop the tools, skills and knowledge necessary to be resilient and grow to be successful, independent adults.

Research shows that ‘cash on hand’ is one of the largest causal effects on the decision and  ability to enroll in college for students from low-income families.  Evidence suggests that a college degree significantly improves one’s employment prospects and potential earnings.  On an annual basis, bachelor’s degree holders earn about $32,000 more than those whose highest degree is a high school diploma*.  The earning gap between college graduates and those with less education continues to widen.

How it Works:

A donor commitment $12,000 or $3,000 per year supports a child to afford the out of pocket expenses that prohibit further education beyond high-school.  Scholarships are awarded directly to the student to pay for books, class resources, transportation, food, etc. or to the institution to pay for tuition, as the student requests. 

Each scholarship will be titled “Your Name Scholarship of the Stratton Foundation” and presented to the student on your behalf.

Stratton Foundation College Scholarship
The Stratton Foundation is making long term investments in long term results by not only providing financial scholarships, but in developing a relationship with each recipient, fostering encouragement, inspiration, pride and accountability.  Consideration is based on academic merit, recognition of the value of education on their future success through a written essay and demonstration of strength of character and promising future.  In 2020, awards were presented to Mary Mendez and Samira Champine.

The Todd Richter First-Generation Scholarship
Mr. Todd Richter has been a long supporter of the Stratton Foundation, starting a first-generation scholarship and supporting 14 students with over $41,000 in out-of-pocket unmet expenses over the past seven years.  Teens who recognize the value of further education as life-changing and demonstrate financial need are considered, and selected based on character, promise, grit, and academic success.  In 2020, scholarships were presented to Arden Wojtach and Devan Kajah (freshmen), Just Sweeney (sophomore), and Dylan Kapusta (senior).

The Wheeler Foundation First-In Family Scholarship
The Wheeler Foundation Scholarship recognizes a student who is the first generation in their family to pursue a post-secondary education and who demonstrated excellent academic performance in high-school.  Applicants must show financial need and be in the top 20% of their graduating class or high-honors. In 2020, the scholarship was first awarded to Karson Barclay.
