EMO
HENRICH AWARD
The Emo Henrich Award is presented annually by the Stratton Foundation, to a Stratton Community member for excellence in his/her field or profession and or exemplary community service. The
annual Emo Henrich Award is named in honor of Stratton’s longtime Ski School director and founder of the Stratton Mountain Boys.
On February 29th, we celebrated the contributions of two very special members of our community, Barbara McCarty and King Wright. Over one hundred people attended the reception that was planned by Kimet Hand and held at the Stratton Mountain School.
Christina (Tini Henrich) Hamilton read a congratulatory letter written by Emo Henrich before the presentations were made.
Accepting the 2007 award for Barbara McCarty was Ryan Dorman, her nephew.

Sky Foulkes presented the 2008 award to King Wright.

Emo Henrich is a gracious and multitalented man with
a wonderful ability of being able to bring people together
at Stratton Mountain. He was a mentor to many, taught
thousands to ski and entertained many more with his artwork
and musical group, The Stratton Mountain Boys. Emo and
his wife Ann were superlative Stratton hosts at their
cozy lodge, The Birkenhaus (1962-2005). They were early
and strong supporters of every non-profit on Stratton
Mountain; including the Chapel of the Snows, Stratton
Mt Fire Department, Stratton Mountain School, The Clinic,
and the Stratton Foundation (in order of their founding).

Perhaps
the Henrichs most unique gift was their extraordinary
ability to create an inclusive environment at Stratton
while teaching, entertaining and bringing people together
on the mountain (guests, employees, 2nd homeowners and
community members) not unlike the Mission of the Stratton
Foundation!
Whether
it was a visiting celebrity, like Jackie Kennedy, John
Newcombe, Arnold Palmer, Paul Newman, or legions of Stratton
Corporation employees, or local skiers; many found their
way to Stratton’s Ski School, Tyrolean Evenings
and The Birkenhaus. Ann and Emo were warm and welcoming
to all and many of their good deeds were done quietly
behind the scenes. The kitchen at Birkenhaus fed everyone
from part-time dishwasher Jake Burton, to well-heeled
dinner guests, to hungry employees who were laid off due
to lack of snow.Stratton
recognized the character, integrity, leadership and ability
of their longtime Ski School director when they initiated
the Emo Henrich Award in his honor in 1989. Plato said “What is honored in a community will be cultivated
there”. The Emo Henrich Award honors individuals
who contribute to our Stratton Community through their
overall excellence and their service to the Stratton Community.
Each year we ask members of the community to
take the time to think about individuals
who have made
an impact on life in the Stratton Mountain Community and
to tell us why they should receive the Emo Henrich Award.
THE
EMO HENRICH AWARD IS PRESENTED ANNUALLY BY THE STRATTON
FOUNDATION TO A RECIPIENT FOR EXCELLENCE IN HIS/HER FIELD
OR PROFESSION AND/OR, EXEMPLARY COMMUNITY SERVICE.
